Cabo de la Vela

This coastal desert region marks where the Guajira dunes meet the Caribbean Sea. It is deeply tied to Wayuu mythology.

Most La Guajira tours spend their first afternoon and night in this area. You will travel in a 4x4 vehicle over unmarked desert tracks from Riohacha.

Expect golden sand, strong winds, and basic conditions. The terrain is flat at sea level, broken only by small coastal cliffs.

Pilón de Azúcar

1 hourVery high winds

This sacred Wayuu hill rises sharply from the coast. It provides clear views of the surrounding desert and the Caribbean Sea. Climb to the top for the best photo angles. Hold onto your hat because the wind at the peak is incredibly strong.

Playa Dorada & Playa Arcoíris

1.5 hoursRainbows in sea mist

These beaches show a sharp contrast between arid land and water. At Playa Arcoíris, waves crash against the cliffs to create rainbows in the sea mist. Playa Dorada offers calmer waters. It is an excellent place for a refreshing swim after a dusty morning drive.
