FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Clear, factual answers to help you prepare for the Colombian desert.

How to get to Punta Gallinas from Riohacha?

You must take a guided 4x4 tour. The drive takes multiple days across unmarked desert tracks. Read our Plan your visit guide for full itinerary details.

Is it safe to visit La Guajira?

It is safe if you book a guided tour. Navigating the desert alone is dangerous due to unmarked roads, extreme heat, and risk of getting stuck in sand or mud.

How much does a tour to Punta Gallinas cost?

A standard 3-day group tour costs between 1,100,000 and 1,430,000 COP per person. This covers 4x4 transport, hammock accommodation, and most meals. Check Tour Price Breakdown for details.

Can I drive to Cabo de la Vela on my own?

We do not recommend it. Standard rental cars cannot handle the terrain. Even experienced drivers get lost on the shifting, unmarked desert tracks without a local guide.

What is a chinchorro hammock?

A chinchorro is a large, hand-woven hammock made by the Wayuu people. It serves as your bed in the rancherías. See Wayuu Hammock Stays to learn how to sleep comfortably in one.

How long is the trip from Riohacha to Cabo de la Vela?

The drive takes about 4 to 5 hours depending on stops in Manaure and Uribia. Tour vehicles usually depart Riohacha around 8:00 AM and arrive in the early afternoon.

Are there ATMs in Cabo de la Vela?

No. There are absolutely no ATMs past Riohacha. You must bring enough small bills in Colombian Pesos for snacks, crafts, and extra drinking water.

When is the best time to visit La Guajira?

The dry seasons (December to April and June to August) are best. Rainy months cause the desert tracks to flood, making routes impassable. See Best time to visit.

What is the northernmost point of South America?

Punta Gallinas is the absolute northernmost point of the continent. A modest lighthouse and a monument mark the geographic extreme.

What do you eat on a Guajira tour?

Meals feature traditional local food. You will mostly eat fresh fish and goat, served with rice and plantains. Vegetarians should notify their tour operator well in advance.

What should I pack for La Guajira desert?

Bring lightweight clothing, a secure wide-brimmed hat, high SPF sunscreen, and a scarf for dust. Do not forget a flashlight and a personal water bottle. Check our Packing List guide.

What are the Taroa Dunes?

The Dunas de Taroa are massive golden sand dunes that plunge directly into the Caribbean Sea. They are a main stop on the second day of most tours.
